Serving our community by finding safe homes for stray pets and bringing attention to the good work done by the Humane Society for Greater Savannah.

SAVANNAH, GA, January 06, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ — Spiva Law Group, P.C., is proud to announce its new partnership with the Humane Society for Greater Savannah. The purpose of this initiative is to bring attention to the large population of stray pets in need of homes throughout Georgia.

Each month, we will be sponsoring a homeless pet waiting to be adopted at the Humane Society. The Pet of the Month will be featured on our website and social media. Be sure to follow us and spread the word! Through this joint effort, we hope to raise awareness about a serious problem facing our society and that more people will be inspired to provide a loving home for pets in need.

The Humane Society for Greater Savannah is a non-profit organization funded entirely by private donations, services, fees, and special events. It receives no government funding. To support the incredible work it does in our community, donate here. To see pets currently in need of a home, follow this link.

Learn More About Pet Homelessness in the United States

The population of homeless pets is enormous in the United States, and it is our responsibility as a society to find humane solutions for this serious problem. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), approximately 6.3 million stray pets enter U.S. animal shelters annually. Tragically, however, the ASPCA further reports that approximately 920,000 shelter animals are euthanized — 390,000 dogs and 530,000 cats — across the country every year.

The numbers are just as heartbreaking within Georgia. According to the Georgia Animal Shelter Alliance (GASA), there are 168 total animal shelters within the state, but only 53 of these are no-kill shelters committed to saving the life of each pet they house. Though the percentage of animals euthanized within the state has steadily decreased over the past 15 years, numbers remain high. The GASA breaks them down as follows:

• 2007 – 152,297 killed (62%), 92,739 saved (38%)
• 2015 – 82,774 killed (41%), 117,249 saved (59%)
• 2017 – 64,667 killed (34%), 126,168 saved (67%)
• 2019 – 47,607 killed (23%), 157,848 saved (77%)

The best place to work on reducing the number of animals euthanized within Georgia even further is right here in our own Chatham County. There are only two animal shelters countywide — Chatham County Animal Services and the Humane Society for Greater Savannah. Only the latter is a no-kill shelter. All in all, of the 5,006 pets who entered shelters within the county in 2021, only 4,257 were saved.
